Church Eaton 1’s made the relatively short trip to Little Stoke hoping to grab 2 wins in 2 following the thrilling win against Ashcombe the week before.
White continued his remarkable record of losing the toss and CE were inserted to bat on a dry, firm looking wicket.
Burslem and Hughes opened up with Hughes edging Mountford through to keeper Harvey for 2. That brought the returning Dan Smith together with Burslem. Both of them struggling to find their absolute best fluency on a slow wicket but showed great resilience to guide CE to 81-1 before Smith hauled out to long on for a crucial 48 from 58. Burslem continued to anchor the innings going through many a batting partner as CE slipped from 81-2 to 135-8. Burslem finally falling for well compiled 48 off 89.
Abdullah Haseem came to the crease with CE in a bit of a self created hole, however played a crucial knock of 31 from 17, including 3 sixes to bring the momentum well and truly back in CE’s favour with LS’s heads appearing to drop. The icing on the cake came from number 11 Steve Pedley who launched the LS opener back over his head for 6 in the final over. CE 185 all out from 39.5.
So with the weather apps launched at tea, rain could be seen approaching approximately 30 mins after the restart time of 16:15. A decision was made to open with spin from both ends to try and get through the required 10 overs to constitute a game, effectively CE needed to defend 47 in those 10. Smith and White took the new ball. Smith bowl with great control whilst White managed just one ball before having to succumb to a calf injury so handed to ball to Melbourne. The ball now like a magnet to the immobile White at slip as a couple of chances went down, however CE managed to bowl the first 10 overs in 20 minutes, with LS seemingly unaware of the incoming rain and game situation working their way to 16-2 at the 10 over mark. Hughes and Ross now brought into the attack for the final couple of overs before right on cue the rain hit at 16:45 and off the players went. Whilst light at times the rain didn’t cease and the skippers shook hands on the result shortly after 6 o’clock. 21 more points for CE and onto Sandon at home next week.
