1XI - Vs Moddershall- Match Report

Wombling free
Church Eaton 1’s headed to Moddershall this week hoping to close the gap on the top four and extend the gap from the drop.
Losing the toss CE were asked to bat on a green yet firm looking wicket.
Burslem and Arnold set about taking to the Moddershall attack - Arnold looking fluent whilst Burslem anchored the innings. Moddershall opener Shaun Brian decided to test out the middle of the pitch whilst Luke Evans tried to bowl a fuller length, both to little avail. Arnold was first to fall bowled for 20 before Dan Smith was strangled down the leg side for 6. Holdcroft next to fall mis timing a pull shot off the impressive Tennakoon for 1. Burslem next to fall for a well compiled 31. George Tilley and the returning Jordan Talbot steadied the ship in the middle overs before skipper White (22*) hit some lusty blows towards the end of the innings to see CE to 144-8 off their allotted 40 overs.
CE opened with Abdullah and Whitehouse, both bowling very well in opening spells regularly beating the outside edge. Abdullah first to strike having Veerappen caught at gully by White (having dropped 48 catches in a row White decided to hold onto a one handed full stretch diving effort) before skipper Quaintance having played and missed at pretty much all of his deliveries knicked one through to Austin for 10. Palmer next to fall, bounced out by White and top edging one to Whitehouse at short fine leg.
Wicket keeper Palmer next to fall LBW to White before Tennakoon inexplicably ran herself out. This brought Dave Womble and Stuart Brennan to the crease. White, Smith and Arnold toiled away but found little response from an ever dying wicket.
Womble going underground and overground on his way to a chanceless 62*, the only half chance given was to Mike Holdcrofts teeth at short leg, pulling one into Mikey’s mouth but sadly he couldn’t hold on and instead was left with blood pouring from his mouth. Credit must genuinely be given to the concern shown by both Womble and the rest of the Moddershall team when Mikey got hit, but also to Mikey who shot back up like nothing had happened.
Womble and Brennan displayed great control to see Moddershall over the line, taking them from 51-5 to overcome CE’s total still 5 down.
So a loss but hard to ask much more from those on the pitch today - fielding was excellent, you just sometimes have to admit that the other team have put on a partnership that was better than we had to offer. Onto Kidsgrove next week as we look to start the end of season run in with a victory.
